El-Kelh Vilage – Edfu Center – Aswan

This Village is known for its production of Fishing nets by hand, especially since about 1933, which can be considered a traditional handicraft that has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to this day in this village. 

The Craft of Producing fishing nets going on a lot of levels, such as: 

  1. Buying a row Material by kilo 
  2. In the upper side of nests, the miqat and pepper are inserted. 
  3. At the bottom of the nets, the miqat, a rope and a lead (heel) are inserted. 

The work takes to finish one fishing net one or two days, this a hard tired work 

The craft men complain from the traders will exploit the excesses of the raw material, the depression of workmanship and the lack of demand of fishermen to buy from them as it was in the past, and most of the craftsmen have abandoned this craft due to the lack of fish and fishing activities, as well as the weak income in this craft, and the lack of interest of young people and new generations on this craft and their travel to Hurghada and tourist cities to work in it and abandon the village.  

– This distinctive craft of this village is actually threatened with extinction and disappearance completely in a way that calls on officials to intervene urgently and immediately to save the existence and continuation of this unique and distinctive craft of this village 

 Important Notes: 

This Village Suffer from poverty and complete deprivation from the basics of life and live , the Homes of This Village are very old and it is threatened to fall at any time, and its people suffer from The narrowness of life, the lack of income, and they live a completely inhuman or dignified life. 

 We ask the officials to intervene urgently and seriously in order to improve the conditions of this village and achieve a decent life for them. 

 Working Period on this Products: 

The Process of  Producing handmade products and finishing from products in the period between seven to ten days, and may be in less period with the increase effort according to the customer’s request and his urgency to obtain the product. 

Problems from the craftsmen’s point of view: 

  • The craftsmen suffer from a lot of problems , this problems such as: 

 

  1. The exaggeration of the raw material and its high prices, and sometimes its unavailability in the local market in Edfu and having to buy it from the Cairo markets, and thus the craft is very high for the craftsman. 
  2. The Exploitation of merchants who buy their products from craftsmen, and then sell them to customers at double the price at which they bought them.

  4. The absence of financial, technical or moral support, or the existence of funding that would allow the expansion of projects and activities for these crafts. 
  5. Not organizing advertisements for their products to reach the largest number of interested and customers. 
  6. Not holding permanent or seasonal permanent or mobile exhibitions in which all products are collected in one place. 
  7. Not holding training courses to train craftsmen and refine their skills, in order to rotate experience between them and the young people of the new generations wishing to learn and master the craft. 
  8. The craftsmen in these villages request the establishment of workshops and workshops equipped with raw materials, tools, machines, and machines that help the craftsman in production and improve and perfect his craft. 
  9. The problem of marketing products widely inside and outside the Edfu Center. 
  10. There are no places designated for the assembly of craftsmen. 
  11. Not communicating with craftsmen or taking care of their problems from the competent authorities. 
  12. Not encouraging craftsmen to self-confidence and the belief of each craftsman in himself and his confidence in his products and quality. 
  13. Lack of education and awareness of the value of heritage crafts and the importance of preserving the heritage of the ancestors and its continuity for the grandchildren and not stopping, disappearing and preserving it for future generations (sustainable heritage development).
