As part of raising awareness about excessive social media use, Aswan University’s Social Solidarity Unit, in collaboration with the National Center for Social and Criminological Research, hosted a symposium titled “Social Media Addiction and Its Impact on Social Relationships among Youth.” The symposium was hosted by Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Dr. Maya Morsi, Minister of Social Solidarity; and Dr. Louay Saad El-Din Nasrat, Acting President of Aswan University.
Dr. Louay Saad El-Din Nasrat emphasized the value of time for young people, the necessity to enhance their sense of belonging and allegiance to their homeland, and the importance of preventing them from adopting detrimental ideas and views. He also advised them to use their creative potential and invest their energies in anything that is useful, as well as to avoid excessive use of social media sites in order to prevent being addicted to electronics.
Dr. Abdel-Latif Saber Abdel-Hamid, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Work for Environmental Affairs and Community Development, discussed the many types of social media and the social consequences of excessive use among young people. He also talked on how to avoid becoming addicted to these sites, as well as the significance of making the best use of the Internet for science and building great social relationships.
Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, a sociology expert and supervisor at the National Center for Social and Criminal Research in Aswan Governorate, emphasized the center’s role in raising awareness of important issues, such as social media addiction and its negative effects on society, particularly among youth.
Ahmed Obaid, Coordinator of the Social Solidarity Unit at Aswan University, concluded the symposium by providing an overview of the university’s Social Solidarity Unit and the services it provides to students, employees, and faculty members, such as awareness activities, social protection programes, and its role in promoting economic empowerment.
