Prof. Louai Saad El-Din Nasrat, Acting President of Aswan University, said that, beginning with the new academic year 2025/2026, all students will be subjected to mandatory medical examinations and drug tests before being housed in university dorms. This move is taken in collaboration with the university’s Social Solidarity Unit, the Anti-Addiction Fund, the Azima Center, and university hospitals as part of the state’s efforts to protect youth and activate the “Building the Egyptian Human Being” initiative.
Dr. Nasrat confirmed that the Social Solidarity Directorate will cover 50% of the cost of examinations, easing students’ financial burden. He stated that the monthly housing expenses had increased by 100 Egyptian pounds over the previous year, as agreed by the University Council. The costs include lodging and meals. He also stated that tuition costs will increase by no more than 10% over the previous year.
Nasrat stated that the university cities consist of seven units that can hold roughly 4,000 students and offer medical services, extensive meals, free internet, and study and recreation halls. The cities consist of five units for women: Sahari City on campus, Nasser City Building, Al-Samad, Al-Seil, and Muslim Youth (Al Shabaat Al Muslimat) , and two units for men: Student City in Abu Al-Rish and the Guest House in Sahari.
Mohamed Abdel Salam, Director General of University Dormitories, explained that housing conditions are decided based on age and academic achievement, with students from governorates further away from Aswan, particularly those from the Halayeb and Shalateen regions, taking precedence over people with disabilities and the sick. Abdel Salam stressed the university’s commitment to provide a safe and exciting environment for students throughout the academic year, noting that housing construction began at the start of the new school year.
