Sustainable Development and Climate Change Control Unit was established by Resolution No. 1039 dated October 20, 2022 issued by Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman_University President, which includes the formation of the Unit’s Board of Directors headed by Prof. Mohamed Abdel-Aziz Mehalal_ Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research_ The Board of Directors also includes The unit director (a member of Academic staff ) and five members of the council are from university Academic staff.
Aswan University pays great attention to issues of sustainable development and confronting the effects of climate changes on the surrounding biological content, as well as interest in the concept of sustainability in education to build a generation capable of dealing with sustainable development and knowledge of the issue of climate changes that we are experiencing these days, as well as with the aim of preserving the eligibility of future generations and creating a society capable of Understanding and working to protect our natural resources. Therefore, education and the various issues and problems associated with it have become important and worthy of research in order to achieve sustainable development.
Aswan University pays special attention to reducing the environmental impact resulting from the various direct and indirect activities that take place in educational institutions, and to conduct research and education in the field of sustainable development and confront the effects of climate changes, and to prepare an environment that allows students and researchers to develop new capabilities that lead to sustainable practices, which results in A more sustainable society.
Accordingly, Aswan University is interested in actively contributing to the implementation of what was stated in the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy 2030 to achieve the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emanating from Egypt’s Vision 2030. Egypt 2030 aims to encourage the use of new energies, the use of smart cities, and the sustainable development of Lake Nasser and Toshka sector, as well as the development of infrastructure, the preservation of Egyptian antiquities, and the treatment of climate impacts on them. It also adopted strengthening the principle of institutional sustainability and working to introduce new educational programs to educate tomorrow’s leaders about the multiple challenges in the sustainable development fields.
Sustainable Development and Climate Change control unit aims to serve the community by developing policies for sustainable development for Aswan Governorate and neighbouring governorates, in addition to controlling climate change within the governorate, as well as studying the needs of society, companies, factories, and civil society, including:
1.Providing the required consultations and studies in the various branches of production and service centers and companies related to sustainable development.
2.The unit with assistance of government agencies, companies, institutions, and individuals in all scientific and applied aspects, through studies, research, applied research projects, and technical consultaion provided by the Academic staff of the university on sustainable development and climate change.
- Developing mechanisms, plans, and programs to organize and follow up work on rationalizing energy and water consumption according to sustainable methods at the university
- Contributing in the marketing of training programs and exhibitions for community members and institutions by circulating specialized training courses in various fields and holding symposiums, conferences, workshops and exhibitions, in cooperation with the agencies working in these fields.
- Participating in developing a plan to confront climate change and reducing its effects on the environment and society. .
- Preparing projects, following up and supervising the development of sustainable environmental and agricultural awareness at the university.
- Preparing cadres capable of finding sustainable, innovative and environmentally sound solutions to problems in the university and the surrounding community.
- Submit through the unit research and applied projects that benefit the region for various funding agencies, local and foreign
9.Preparing and implementing the university’s carbon footprint and maintaining emissions reduction on campus.
- Inclusion of the concept of sustainable development in research points and the use of research outputs and patents to develop and serve the university in the field of sustainable development.
- Establishing and following up the establishment of companies to serve the university and the university community in accordance with the Law of Establishing Companies in Universities.
- Providing training, educational and educational services to the university community and the surrounding community related to achieving sustainable development goals.
- Establishing strategic relations for cooperation between the university, business institutions, civil society, and various scientific and non-scientific bodies at home and abroad to achieve sustainable development goals.
- Encouraging university students to participate in the various activities of the unit.
Activities and events in which the unit participated:
- The decision of University President and the Vice President for Studies and Research to form research teams for the unit, which includes three axes:
A – Study of Modern methods for the sustainable development of Lake Nasser
B – Studying the types of mineral resources and how to use them sustainably.
C – Study of the impact of groundwater and the protection of antiquities.
- starting the work in the axes of the research teams in partnership with the concerned university faculties – Environmental Affairs Agency, Aswan Branch – Lake Nasser Development Authority – High Dam Authority – Earthquake Center in Aswan – Irrigation of Aswan – Nuclear Materials Authority in Aswan – Shalatin Mineral Resources Company – Directorate of Antiquities in Aswan
- Participation in the Forum of Activities and Events of Egyptian Public Universities to Confront Climate Change at Galala University, November 2022
- Participation with a delegation in the UNI-Green project at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and its various workshops.
- Participation with a delegation in the Egyptian Universities Forum, “Our Egyptian Universities and Our Green Future After COP27” at Assiut University, March 8, 2022.
- Participation with the Aswan Media Complex in giving lectures in the various symposiums of the complex.

Sustainability Literacy Assessment (SLA) is a method for evaluating students’ skills, knowledge, and attitudes about fundamental sustainability concepts. It designed to evaluate the students’ understanding of sustainability-related concepts and themes. Also, it is administered to the entire student body.
