13.3.3 Participate in co-operative planning for climate change disasters, working with government

(Aswan University believes that working with local, regional, and international parties in planning for climate change disasters, and offer information and support for local community and government).
 
Aswan University, headed by Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman_ Aswan university President_ and in attendance of Prof. Mohamed Abdel-Aziz Mehalal_ Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research_ and a scientific delegation of university scientists participated in the activities and events of Egyptian public universities to confront climate change. Which is held under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Ashour – Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
In frame of the concern of Aswan University, headed by Prof. Ayman Mahmoud Othman _Aswan University President_ in scientific research by participating in scientific and research conferences, a team of Aswan University scientists participated in response to the invitation from Ain Shams University to Aswan University to represent Aswan University in a meeting of Egyptian-German experts dialogue on climate change and based on the directives of Prof. Ayman Othman_ Aswan University President _ to agree to participate in this joint scientific meeting.
 
 
 
 
  • Accordingly, Aswan University, in cooperation with the International Center for Consultation and Public Services, organized the Training and Sustainable Development Program” to discuss many special topics, in addition to the ecosystem, global warming, environment and sustainable development, and how to environmental and industrial sustainability. Development in the service of investment and linking it to the green industry and the sustainable environment, where the program aims to protect the environment and work on community service and raises many environmental and social issues through training and work to spread awareness and increase environmental culture among university students and the outside community to consolidate the importance of preserving the environment. The program attracted many faculty members and their assistants in various faculties, university students and some participating bodies from abroad.

Aswan University participated with the National Project Committee for the reclamation and cultivation of one million feddans and population centers, with the participation of the High Dam Lake Development Authority, the General Authority for Construction Projects and Agricultural Development, the Desert Research Center, the Land Institute, and a group of professors and presidents of Egyptian universities in the framework of achieving Egypt’s vision for sustainable development 2030

Objectives of the protocol:
  1. Preparing and implementing research projects
  2. Developing and exploiting Aswan University farms to serve the environment sector and community service
  3. Training on food manufacturing and food safety using food resources in the Aswan environment
  4. Preparing detailed studies on the desert areas in Aswan Governorate, including climatic changes, and drawing up an agricultural and industrial map, as well as a mining map for the most important of its multiple mineral wealth.
  5. Entering a technical partnership to develop and modernize agriculture… and many other goals
  • Aswan University has established a special unit Natural Hazards Unit, it has been established few years ago (March 2013). This unit is considered the expert house that offers information and support for local community and government.
Objectives of the “Natural Hazards Unit”:
  • Study of climate change and its effects and the role of greenhouse gas emissions in the phenomenon of global warming, rising sea levels and their impact on the Egyptian delta, coastal cities and facilities, and coastal erosion.
  • Study of natural hazards on asphalt roads, railway lines and bridges in the southern valley area (such as torrents, weathering, and sliding of rock masses in places of major bends near inconsistent rocks), especially Aswan – Bernice Road, Edfu – Marsa Alam, Aswan – Abu Simbel With the aim of identifying dangerous places and providing the most appropriate solutions that include the possibility of making use of flood water.
  • Study the impact of torrents, earthquakes, and storms on large civil facilities such as factories, residential cities, dams, reservoirs, tourist villages and farms, and prepare a special code for each of them and consider this study a condition of the conditions for licensing the establishment and continuation of these facilities
  • Study sand dune encroachment, desertification, silting, and groundwater movement and the extent of their impact on the efficiency and life span of Lake Nasser
  • Mapping the Nile islands and other obstacles in detail in the navigational course between Aswan and Luxor and placing warning signs (beeches) in appropriate places to avoid the phenomenon of cruise ships ’weariness in the winter season, which is more crowded with tourists.
  • Carrying out a study of natural risks for the benefit of insurance companies for all establishments that require insurance as a means of assisting both insurance companies and contracting establishments to be careful and reduce potential natural risks.
  • Providing urgent temporary consultations to all parties that request them from the unit in its field of specialization.
  • Executing research projects in the field of natural hazards in cooperation with ministries, agencies, organizations, universities, and local and international research centers.
  • Giving academic lectures and practical and training applications to university students to spread the concept of natural hazards and raise awareness of the necessary measures to reduce them.
  • Preparing publications, posters, and radio and television programs to raise awareness and participate in community service in the area ofthe unit’s specialization.
  • Giving cultural awareness lectures to the public in general at the university’s headquarters, clubs and NGOs in the field of specialization.

Moreover, Aswan University participated in the Workshop about the Role of the Botanical Garden in Agricultural and Environmental Development. The workshop was organized by Horticulture Research Institute in cooperation with Food Technological Research Institute.
