- Also, the General Administration of Dorms and Nutrition at the university provides students (Christians – vegetarians) with special meals for them after informing the administration.
- The central restaurant provides a good menu to variation meals. It contains sustainable food choices. Special Conference Meals have been provided to visitors including vegetarian and vegan food.
- Aswan University has improved a Policy to end hunger. Therefore, Aswan University is committed to provide sustainable food and address students and staff needing this support according to University Council Decisions for several academic years; 2020-2021 & 2022-2023 & 2023-2024.
- Aswan University always strives to harness all its capabilities to achieve sustainable food self-sufficiency to meet the needs of students, staff, faculty and the local community, through plant, animal, poultry and fish production farms. The university sells the products of these farms to students, staff and university employees. These products are also used in the food production process in the central restaurant.
- The College of Agriculture has established several research units, such as the bakery, dairy, and oil presses unit that depend on the seeds of oily, aromatic and medicinal crops.
- The university also has a “Research unit for studying tropical plants“ that works to produce new strains of plants that are resistant to harsh climatic conditions, according to the dry desert nature of Aswan Governorate.
- Aswan University has established the “Fish Hatchery project“ for the Faculty of Fisheries and Fisheries Technology, where this project supports the fish farming process to help increase the proportion of fisheries and provide a permanent source of sustainable food within the university and the outside community.
- In December 2020, the university launched Hangamelha “We Will Beautify It” initiative which began its activities on December 3, 2020, with the aim of increasing the percentage of green spaces in Aswan, as well as developing awareness among university students of the importance of trees and preserving the environment. It is an important source of sustainable food resources with an economic return and has the ability to face climate changes, rationalize water use and replace these trees (lemon, olive and orange) with wooden trees that consume large amounts of water and without an economic return. Through this initiative, 1,100 fruitful lemon trees, vegetables and fruits were planted at Aswan University. Where the university reclaimed the farm of the Faculty of Agriculture on the airport road on an area of 52 acres to grow palm trees, grapes and some medicinal plants, and planted 9 acres of lemon and orange trees to fill the shortage of these fruits. In addition to several sections for the cultivation of palm trees, grapes and high-quality mangoes on an area of 3 acres of different types of mangoes.
Aswan University also presents the “food options” available on campus, and it shows all the “sustainable and healthy food” options that are available. They provide and support a balanced diet, with adequate nutrients and appropriate calories, and we encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Hence, we can say that Aswan University adapts and coexists with all environmental and economic conditions, and even harnesses them for its own benefit and the interests of students, staff, employees and the local community by exploiting all available resources.
