Fighting Hunger on Campus
Policy solutions to food insecurity:
- Aswan University has improved a Policy to end hunger. Therefore, Aswan University is committed to provide sustainable food and address students and staff needing this support according to University Council Decisions for several academic years; 2020-2021 & 2022-2023 & 2023-2024.
Campus solutions
- Youth welfare administration of each faculty determines the number of students, who are unable to afford the cost of food, and the university presents support to them.
- Meals are provided to students residing in the university dormitories.
- The university council’s decision to provide subsidized meals for non-resident students in the university dormitories.
Food Security Program:
Aswan University has a “Food Security Program” for students, faculty employees and staff:
This program provides enough food of adequate quality through local production or imports (including food aid).
The program also allows access by individuals (students – workers – faculty members) to sufficient resources (entitlements) to obtain appropriate food through the appropriate diet, clean water, sanitation, and health care to reach a state of nutritional well-being where all physiological needs are met to achieve food security.
The services provided by the program:
- It provides meals for employees and staff at subsidized prices in the Central Restaurant.
- The Youth Care department provides Food Vouchers to students at subsidized prices and Free to university Hostels students.
- The university rents cafeterias to restaurants to provide fast food
- The university has established a bakery unit at the College of Agriculture to sell baked goods at subsidized prices to students and university employees.
- Aswan University has established the “Fish Hatchery project“ for the Faculty of Fisheries and Fisheries Technology, where this project supports the fish farming process to help increase the proportion of fisheries and provide a permanent source of sustainable food within the university and the outside community
- Where the university has a “Research unit for the study of Tropical Plants” that works to increase agricultural productivity, raise its efficiency and produce new strains of plants that are resistant to difficult climatic conditions such as drought.
Collaboration
- In 2020, Aswan University signed a cooperation protocol with Social Solidarity, with the aim of establishing a Social Solidarity Unit at the university.
- In 2021, the protocol was activated and accordingly the Social Solidarity Unit was established at Aswan University, which aims to provide direct and indirect social services to all segments of society. Rehabilitative, educational, awareness-raising, economic or therapeutic, whether this student is a normal or disabled student.
- Aswan University signed a cooperation protocol with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to benefit from universities and research centers to provide scientific advice because the university represents the house of expertise and in light of the waste of water resources with old irrigation. Submitting documents within the governorate.
- In December 2020, the university signed a cooperation protocol with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation – Desert Research Center – Land, Water and Environment Research Institute – General Authority for Reconstruction and Agricultural Development Projects regarding cooperation in the areas of land classification inventory.
- In December 2020, the university’s Hangamelha initiative _“We will beautify it”_ was launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Manpower and Aswan Governorate and activating the joint tripartite cooperation protocol between (Ministry of Manpower – Aswan Governorate – Aswan University) to activate the “Hanghmlha” initiative and planting 1100 fruitful lemon trees at Aswan University with the aim of Occupy the desert and increase green spaces. Transforming desert spaces into green spaces and providing foodstuffs, infrastructure and basic materials for university employees and students, vegetables, and fruits. Where the university reclaimed the farm of the College of Agriculture on Airport Road on an area of 52 acres to grow palms, grapes, and some medicinal plants, and planted 9 acres of lemon and orange trees to fill the deficit of these fruits. In addition to several sections to cultivate high quality Siwi palms, grapes and mangoes on 3 acres of various species of mangoes.
- The Faculty of Agriculture, Aswan University signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian Gulf Company for the Reclamation of Desert Lands for the year 2019
